unbroken without exception and were of skeleton nature with laths placed in 3 corrugations of the outermost sheets in order to keep them from moving in the cases,

On opening the cases the outer sheets in most of the cases were found to be cracked and broken rendering them useless and most of those below were also cracked. On lifting out the sheets, which was done most carefully, many of the broke in two, showing that they would not bear their om weight when lifted at each end. The Chief Storekeeper is making a retum of the sheets which have been stacked and are uncracked and the per- -centage of whole sheets ia deplorably low.

Quite apart from the damage by breakage the nature of the material of which the sheets are composed is such as to render them useless. The material is brittle and not of even structure or thickness. The asbestos fibre which should strengthen them is "short" and the sheets will bear no weight at all.

I have had tests made upon several undamaged sheets when supported at a span equal to the spacing of the purlins of the roof, i.e. 3 ft. 6 in. and the following are the results:-

(a). Sheet broke under a concentrated lead applied at the

centre of the span equivalent to 89 lbs. per sq. ft. (b). Sheet broke under m evenly distributed load equivalent

to 19.6 lbs. per sq. ft.

(a). Sheet broke under a weight of 19 lbs. dropped from 1 foot above the sheet and applied at the centre.

Assuming a horizontal wind pressure of 50 lbs

per sq. foot, the normal pressure on this roof would at the minimum be about 20 lbs. per sq. foot, so that the sheets would not be strong enough to withstand this load. This is all neglect- -ing the load which would be applied if a man were on the roof

repairing or even in the first instance laying the sheets, and

this material could not possibly support such a load. ▲ sheet
